Owen Coyle is almost certain to be appointed as Gary Megson’s replacement at Bolton Wanderers after Burnley released a statement on their website yesterday afternoon.

The Clarets announced that Coyle had “reaffirmed his desire to leave” Turf Moor. The two clubs are now expected to enter into discussions in order to strike up a satisfactory compensation deal for Burnley.

Coyle took over at the helm of Burnley in 2007 and helped the club progress into the Premier League this season. Last summer he signed a 12-month extension to his three-year contract.

It has been suggested a figure in the region of £3 million would be enough to compensate Burnley and secure the move to the Reebok Stadium.

Coyle enjoys a special affiliation with the Trotters, where was deployed as a striker between 1993 and 1995. He was also in the running to be appointed as Bolton manager in October 2007, but Megson was ultimately chosen to take over at the club.

It was reported that Coyle met Bolton Chairman Phil Gartside on Sunday night before having prolonged discussions with his Burnley superiors on Monday.

It is now expected to be only a matter of time before he is appointed the new manager of Bolton with the possibility of him being in charge for the Trotters’ weekend clash against Sunderland.

This morning he has been placed on leave by Burnley as the club tries to strike up a suitable deal with Bolton.

The statement on the Burnley website yesterday in full said: “Owen Coyle has today reaffirmed his desire to leave Burnley Football Club and join Bolton Wanderers Football Club.”

“Burnley Football Club will now enter discussions with Bolton Wanderers Football Club, due to the fact that compensation between the two parties has yet to be agreed.”

“There will be no further comment at this time.”

Should Coyle make the switch it will be a bitter disappointment for Burnley fans. Colye has transformed the fortunes of the Clarets, helping them to promotion and steering the team to a credible 14th position in the league.

Mark Hughes is the early favourite to replace Coyle at Turf Moor.
