Derby County manager Nigel Clough  is faced with the looming prospect of an investigation after it was alleged that he intentionally kneed his counterpart Billy Davies.

The incident is reported to have occurred during the tempestuous Championship clash between local rivals Derby and Nottingham Forest.

The son of Nottingham Forest and Derby County legend Brian Clough, the current Derby manager is well respected by his fellow peers and has earned a reputation as a gentleman within the sport.

These claims by the Forest manager could pose a serious threat to Clough’s image. The FA have already requested a copy of the video from the game.

The incident is purported to have occurred when the Forest players became embroiled in a confrontation at the end of the match. Davies has claimed the opposing manager ran over and kneed him from behind.

He also described the incident as ‘cowardly’. “I told him I wouldn’t have minded him doing it to my face but to do it when my back was turned was cowardly,” an enraged Davies said.

He added: “He tried to claim it was an accident but he knows, as well as I know, that it was no accident. He was trying to be clever and he did exactly what he was trying to do.”

Davies blamed the intensity of the derby. He suggested the rivalry between the two teams consumed Clough and prompted him to act in such a manner.

“I used to get on really well with Nigel but obviously there’s a lot of poison in and around this fixture.

“I’ve played in Old Firm games and I’ve never come across anything like it - not what happens on the field but the stuff that goes around it.”

Earlier this season both clubs landed hefty fines when the failed to control their players in the corresponding fixture. Forest were fined £15,000 while Derby received a slap on the wrists to the tune of £10,000.

Davies’ side won that game 3-2 while Clough enacted revenge when his team claimed a precious 1-0 victory.
