For a brief couple of hours yesterday the World Cup was overshadowed by the amazing events unfolding on Wimbledon’s Court 18.

The first-round match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut trickled into a fifth set which is yet to be concluded after a staggering nine hours and 58 minutes.

The pair have broken the record for the longest tennis match ever in terms of time, number of games and the longest set.

The fifth set alone broke the record for the previous longest match which stood at six hours and 33 minutes.

Here is what the professionals made of the match on Twitter.

Pat Cash: “Unbelievable Mahut and Isner 59 -59 in the 5th set!!! 10 hrs so far what a day at Wimb Dent fastest serve ever at Wimbledon 148 mph.”

Bob Bryan: “We are witnessing history and there seems to be no end in sight!”

Greg Rusedski: “You cannot be serious! 59 all in the 5th and seven hours later still not finished lets hope one player can atleast get to 100 aces.”
