Liverpool are set to appoint Roy Hodgson as their new manager on Thursday, with the former Fulham boss refusing to wait for a decision on Fabio Capello’s future with England.

It is believed that Christian Purslow, Liverpool’s Chief Executive, has always had Hodgson at the top of his list of potential candidates, despite interest in the job from former Real Madrid manager Manuel Pellegrini and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish.

The club have been quick to speed up the appointment after the former Inter Milan boss was linked with the England job after Fabio Capello’s future was brought into question following a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Hodgson’s first job at Anfield will be to deal with bids for a number of the team’s star players including captain Steven Gerrard and Spain striker Fernando Torres.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and Club President Florentino Perez have both expressed interest in bringing the Liverpool captain to the Spanish capital and are believed to be ready to table a take-it-or-leave-it offer of £20million for the Huyton-born midfielder.

Meanwhile both Chelsea and Barcelona are believed to be interested in striker Fernando Torres, who is valued at over £60million.

But with both clubs being well aware of the poor financial situation at Anfield they may put in considerably smaller bids for Torres, who is currently at the World Cup with Spain.

Should both players depart from Anfield there is no promises from the board that the manager would be given the proceeds of sales to spend in the transfer market, meaning Hodgson may be forced to wheel and deal in order to replace any outgoing players.
