Australia and Waratahs winger Drew Mitchell has been recalled by Robbie Deans ahead of the Wallabies’ first appearance at this year’s Tri Nations.

Mitchell, 26, had been dropped following a disappointing showing in the June test matches, but has returned because of injuries to other key players.

Much has been said about the lack of depth of Australia’s back three, and with injury ruling out Peter Hynes and the impressive Digby Ioane, Mitchell will be looking to take his chance.

He has been recalled alongside Cameron Shepherd and will likely see the two fight for one starter’s jersey, while Adam Ashley-Cooper is favourite to occupy the other wing.

Mitchell’s try scoring record for his country of 19 in 44 tests led many to be surprised when he was left out of the initial squad but the Wallabies now have a proven try scorer at the highest level in Mitchell, who will be hungry to prove his detractors wrong should he get the chance.

The Wallabies open their account on Saturday against the Springboks in Brisbane, who themselves will be keen to forget the last fortnight after two disappointing defeats to the All Blacks.
