The FIA has introduced new safety car rules to prevent a repeat of the controversy at the European Grand Prix two weeks ago.

FIA race director Charlie Whiting met with teams’ sporting directors at Silverstone this week to thrash out concerns over the regulations.

Several new ideas were believed to be discussed including completely closing the pit lane, but the understanding is that cars will now be forced to be much slower than they were expected to be before.

Previously under the safety car, drivers had to drive to a ‘Delta’ time of 120% of a standard F1 lap, however, under the new regulations, they will have to drive to the estimated speed of the safety car -a move which would prevent an F1 car overtaking the safety car, as Lewis Hamilton did in Valencia.

The new Delta time will be tested in both free practices before it comes into force for the first time in Sunday’s race at the newly-revised Silverstone circuit.

The FIA has also reacted to complaints from drivers penalised at Valencia for speeding under the safety car because they could not brake quickly or safely enough. The new regulations mean that a driver will be exempt from the new safety car speed limit for the final 200m of the lap.

Safety car regulations have been under constant scrutiny this year, and it will be worth watching how the new regulations work should the safety car be engaged at Silverstone.
