Dundee United to lodge AEK complaint with UEFA
Dundee United are expected to file a complaint with UEFA following the disruption surrounding their Europa League tie with AEK Athens.
The venue of the second leg of their European qualifier had been moved from Athens’ home ground to the stadium of local team Panionios following the failure of sprinklers last Monday.
However, Panionios supporters were angry at the decision to relocate bitter rivals AEK to their stadium in Nea Smyrni.
In an audacious attempt to block the match from going ahead, a group of fans broke into the stadium and caused substantial damage, ripping up the turf and damaging the goalposts.
The trouble eventually led to a further change in venue, with Dundee now playing AEK at Olympiakos’ Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in the Greek capital. AEK officials opted to ban their fans from the match to avoid further problems.
