Former Wales midfielder Gary Speed is expected to be unveiled as the new Sheffield United manager on Tuesday.

Speed reportedly met Blades chairman Kevin McCabe and chief executive Trevor Birch to discuss his first management role on Monday. The 40-year-old made 38 appearances for Sheffield United since joining in 2008 before retiring due to injury.

Kevin Blackwell was sacked on Sunday following a number of disappointing results including a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to Queen’s Park Rangers at Bramall Lane. The former Leeds United manager had led The Blades into the 2009 play-offs but suffered a disappointing defeat to Burnley in the final at Wembley.

A club statement read: “Sheffield United has called a press conference for Tuesday afternoon when the new manager will be announced.

“The identity of Kevin Blackwell’s replacement will be confirmed at the press conference.

“Chief executive Trevor Birch and the new manager will be present at Tuesday’s announcement.”
