Northampton Saints completed a rampant 31-10 bonus victory over Bath to extend their undefeated start this year’s Aviva Premiership and go three points clear at the top of the table.

A brace from impressive England back Chris Ashton and nine points from fly half Shane Geraghty helped the hosts to their fourth win of the season.

Replacement Ben Williams grabbed a late consolation for the West Country side, with five points coming from Olly Barkley.

Ashton, premiership player of the season last year, showed why he will be one of the first names on Martin Johnson’s team sheet for the autumn internationals with two impressive scores.

Elsewhere, London Wasps kick-started their season with a hard-fought 37-30 victory over bitter rivals Leicester Tigers. A brace from winger Tom Varndell and a late winner from Richard Haughton gave the Wycombe side their first win of the season.

Sale produced a stirring second-half comeback to beat Harlequins 21-17, while Exeter made it two wins out three with a strong home display against Newcastle Falcons, the recently-promoted side edging a tight contest 22-17.

London Irish won 23-16 at the Madejski Stadium to continue Gloucester’s disappointing start to the season.

Leeds, who have made an equally poor to this campaign, were soundly beaten by Saracens 26-14 at Headingly – a result which leaves them without a win and firmly rooted to the foot of the table.
