Darren Fletcher believes Mexican forward Javier Hernández will develop into an Old Trafford great following a promising start to his Manchester United career.

The Scotland international sung the striker’s praises after United’s crucial 1-0 Champions League victory over Valencia at the intimidating Mestalla Stadium.

Hernández scored an 85th-minute winner to move the English side to the summit of Group C, level on points with Scottish champions Rangers.

“Javier got his head down and finished it fantastically,” said the Scotland captain. “He showed he is going to be a great player for Manchester United.

“He is young and still getting used to the way we play. But he has come in from Mexico and is a real talent.”

Sir Alex Ferguson signed the 22-year-old Hernández for £7.4million after he impressed for Mexico during this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

Hernández, who had only made one start for United since scoring in the Charity Shield against Chelsea in August, remained level-headed despite his obvious elation at his first Champions League goal.

“It is a dream come true for me but the result is the biggest thing for me,” said Hernández.

“I’m so happy about the goal and it will give me so much confidence. I am only at the start of my career with United and to score so early in the Champions League is a big boost for me.”
