Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz has been sacked by the Portuguese Football Federation after he was handed a six-month ban for insulting anti-doping agents ahead of the World Cup.

“Carlos Queiroz’s contract is settled (ended) with immediate effect,” Gilberto Madail, president of the FPF, told a news conference.

Queiroz had originally been given a one-month suspension in August, but Portugal’s anti-doping authority then extended the sanction to six months.

Portugal have endured a stuttering start to their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, suffering a 1-0 defeat in Norway after a 4-4 draw at home to Cyprus three days earlier.

Queiroz, who has managed Real Madrid and has twice been Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United, was in charge of the national side for two years.
