Novak Djokovic believes he could benefit from the extra day’s rest after the US Open final was postponed due to rain in New York.

The clash between the Serb and Rafael Nadal was postponed until Monday at 2100BST – meaning the Flushing Meadows Grand Slam has now gone into a third week for three years in a row.

And Djokovic, who emerged victorious after a gruelling five-set semi-final with Roger Federer on Saturday, will surely reap the rewards of an additional day of recovery ahead of his second US Open final.

“Maybe it goes in my favour, it being cancelled today,” Djokovic said on US television. “I’m sure I’ll be fit for tomorrow (Monday) and play my best tennis.”
