Juventus have moved to quash rumours suggesting Manchester United have made contact with the Turin club over the possible sale of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

Reports from Italy suggested United, who are likely to see Edwin van der Sar retire at the end of the current campaign, were planning to offer €18million for the Italy number one’s services in the January transfer window.

However, both Juventus’ general director Giuseppe Marotta and the player’s agent have rubbished the rumours.

“I deny any negotiation with United, Buffon is a Juventus player,” said Marotta.

Buffon, 32, who is currently recovering from a back injury and will not feature for the Old Lady until the New Year, signed a contract extension earlier this year to keep him in Turin until 2013.

Buffon’s agent Silvano Martina added: “These transfer rumours make no sense. Buffon has been sidelined for three months so who would want an injured player?

“Moreover, it seems to me that the best player at United so far has been Van der Sar.”
