World No9 Elena Dementieva has announced her retirement from tennis at the age of 29 after her straight-sets defeat to Francesca Schiavone at the WTA Championships in Doha.

The Russian, who reached a career-high ranking of No3 last season and won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, made the announcement on court following her loss to the Italian.

“I would like to thank all the players for an amazing experience and some wonderful memories,” said Dementieva as she called time on 12-year career in which she won 16 titles. “It’s very emotional.

“I would like to thank all the people round the world that have supported me throughout my career and especially my fan club, you were always there for me. No matter winning or losing, I could always feel your support so thank you for your devotion.”
