Aston Villa captain Stilian Petrov has been ruled out for at least two months with a knee injury.

The Bulgarian international was hurt during the first half of Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on Saturday and newly-appointed manager Gerard Houiller confirmed Petrov may have to undergo knee surgery.

“Unfortunately I think we have lost Stilian Petrov for maybe at least two months,” Houllier said.

“We will see if he needs an operation or not – we will know that by the middle of the week. It is a shame because he was getting up to a good level.

“It was a very unfortunate accident.”

The 31-year-old has made 166 appearances for Villa since joining from Celtic in 2006. He was crowned Bulgaria’s Player of the Year in 2005 following an impressive season at Celtic Park.
