Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was “shocked” and “disappointed” when Wayne Rooney told him he wants to leave Manchester United.

The United boss revealed the news in an interview with MUTV filmed before he spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon.

“We are as bemused as anyone can be, we can’t quite understand why he would want to leave,” said Ferguson.

Speculation surrounding the 24-year-old striker’s future has been rife after reports suggested that the England forward did not want to sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

“I was in the office on 14 August and David phoned me to say he (Rooney) wasn’t signing a contract,” Ferguson added. “I was dumbfounded. Only months before he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world.

“I asked to have a meeting with the boy. He reiterated what his agent said, that he wanted to go.”

Rooney’s current deal with United expires at the end of next season.
