Nathan Hauritz has been omitted from Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test in Brisbane next week.

Young left arm slow bowler Xavier Doherty will take the spinner’s spot for the Gabba Test match following impressive early season form for Tasmania.

Hauritz has held the spinner’s role for two years but struggled during his side’s recent tour of India.

Others cut from the initial 17-man squad include Ryan Harris, Callum Ferguson and Usman Khawaja.

Leg spinner Steven Smith is also retained but his return of 2-118 against England for Australia ‘A’ could mean Xavier Doherty starts in Brisbane.

And both Simon Katich and Michael Clarke, who have both carried injuries in the build-up to the Test series, have recovered in time for next week’s series opener.

Australia Test squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Michael Clarke (vice-captain), Doug Bollinger, Xavier Doherty, Brad Haddin, Mike Hussey, Ben Hilfenhaus, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Marcus North, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Shane Watson
