Ajax forward Luis Suárez has been banned for seven matches for biting an opponent during a game.

The 23-year-old Uruguay international, who had already been suspended for two matches by his club for the off-the-ball incident, bit PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal on the shoulder following a disagreement during Ajax’s goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven on Saturday.

It is not the first time Suárez has become embroiled in controversy after the forward deliberately handled the ball on the goal line to stop Ghana scoring the winner in the dying seconds of Uruguay’s World Cup quarter-final against the African nation earlier this year.

Although Ghana were awarded a spot-kick and Suárez sent off, Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty and the South American nation progressed to the semi-finals after emerging victorious from the subsequent shoot-out.
