Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has ruled out a move for out-of-favour Manchester United striker Michael Owen in January.

Since arriving at Old Trafford Owen has rarely shown the form which earned him plaudits at Liverpool and has thus slipped behind Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernández in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

It was believed that Houllier, who managed Owen during his time at Anfield, was ready to move for the 30-year-old in the January transfer window.

But the Frenchman has dismissed the speculation, stating he is not interested in the former England international.

“No. In terms of some strikers Emile [Heskey] and John [Carew] will come back. There is no point,” said Houllier.

However, Houllier did admit to be interested in signing “one or two players in January”.
