Sir Alex: Wayne Rooney could return against Wigan
Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could return to the bench for Saturday’s clash against Wigan at Old Trafford.
The England international, who has not featured for United since their Premier League match against West Brom in October, has spent the last two weeks in the United States recovering from a recurring ankle problem.
“I don’t think he’ll start,” said Ferguson. “Maybe he will reach the bench, but he will certainly play on Wednesday against Rangers.”
Assistant manager Mike Phelan last weekend suggested their £30m striker, who signed a new five-year contract at Old Trafford last month, would struggle to be fit in time to face the Lactics but should be ready for a return to Champions League football next Wednesday.
“Will he play? We will have a look and then build towards next weekend,” said Phelan. “The exercise that we have put in place for him has worked well.”
Ferguson will be without midfielder Ryan Giggs and full-back Rafael as United look to close the gap on league leaders Chelsea.
