Manchester City captain Carlos Tevez has stunned the club by handing in a transfer request.

The Eastlands club swiftly rejected the 26-year-old  Argentinean’s  request and will be keen to hold on to their leading scorer.

A club statement read: “Roberto Mancini and all at the club have shown, and will continue to show, sensitivity to Carlos’ personal circumstances including the issue of his family being based overseas.

“The club remains disappointed by this situation and particularly with the actions of Carlos’ representative.”

Tevez, who joined City from local rivals Manchester United last year,  was clearly unhappy with manager Roberto Mancini when he was  substituted  in his last match against Bolton earlier this month. And it has been no secret that both player and manager have been at odds with one another.

The real reasons for Tevez, brought to the club by Mark Hughes,  wanting-out remain to be confirmed although some reports have suggested that he is jaded with football and may quit the sport all together.

City now sit second in the Premier League after their win at West Ham, level on points with leaders Arsenal.

The statement continued: “The written transfer request is in stark contrast to Carlos’ stated position in both public and club contexts.

“This is both an unfortunate and unwelcome distraction and the club will remain focused on the games ahead in what is turning out to be a very promising season. The door remains open for Carlos to be selected to play.”

Tevez has played in England for four years after initally starting on the fringes at West Ham alongside compatriot Javier Mascherano.

Tevez famously helped the Hammers stay up with his goal on the last day of the season at Old Trafford, before his move led him  to win a Premier League title, the Champions League, the League Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson.
