Dean became a Premier League referee in 2000 and was subsequently promoted to the Fifa list in 2003 following his consistent performances.
In 2004, he officiated his first international match, a friendly between Holland and the Republic of Ireland.
Dean was then put in charge for the Championship play-off final in 2006 between Leeds United and Watford, who won promotion to the Premier League with a 3-0 win.
In 2008, he took charge on the FA Cup Final between Portsmouth and Cardiff City at Wembley.
