Chelsea deserved Liverpool draw, says Fernando Torres
Striker believes Chelsea deserved at least a point from Sunday's clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge
Fernando Torres believes Liverpool were fortunate to claim a 1-0 victory over Chelsea – and insists the Blues are still in the title race.
The Spain international, 26, made his debut for the London club on Sunday following his record-breaking £50m transfer from Liverpool – but he was powerless to prevent his old team-mates taking all three points courtesy of Raul Meireles’ second-half strike.
“It was very difficult, Liverpool played a good game, with three at the back,” Torres told Chelsea TV. “We were not expecting that and maybe they took advantage of that.
“I think the fair result was the draw, it was unfair to lose that game, but now we are looking forwards to the next game and will keep fighting until the end. There are a lot of points still to play [for].”
Chelsea’s new recruit rarely troubled the Liverpool rearguard as Jamie Carragher marked his return from a shoulder injury with an inspired performance in defence.
Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti opted to substitute Torres mid-way through the second half and the Spanish striker admits he was disappointed not to have tasted victory on his Stamford Bridge debut.
“Obviously everyone wants to win, especially if it is their first game at home,” Torres added. “But I will still have very good memories about my reception here and want to thank all of the Chelsea fans for that nice reception. The result was not the best, but we have to keep going and fighting until the end.”
