Reina hints trophy hunt could tempt him into Anfield exit
Goalkeeper hints at summer transfer away from Liverpool with Man United a possible destination
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has hinted he may follow Fernando Torres’s lead and consider an Anfield exit if the Reds fail to start challenging for silverware again soon.
Reina, who signed a new six-year deal at Anfield last April, is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and has been linked with a summer switch to Manchester United to replace Edwin van der Sar, who will retire at the end of the season.
“Yes, well Van der Sar will hang up his gloves in the summer so of course they are looking,” the 28-year-old told Spanish radio station Ondo Sera. “I can’t do anything. I can’t say anything logically as I have a contract with Liverpool.
“Of course one likes to fight for titles and be in a team that does that. We always fought to be in the Champions League and try to win the title. But unfortunately it hasn’t been the case in the last couple of years.”
The Spaniard also admits he is keen to challange for the top honours again – something he has been unable to do during recent seasons at Liverpool.
“I won’t lie, I want to play in the Champions League and challenge for titles,” added the former Barcelona and Villarreal keeper.
“Nothing is fundamental but it [the Champions League] is important. I want to aspire to the maximum in my career, and that means trophies.”
