Clarence Seedorf shines in AC Milan’s derby win over Inter
Veteran Milan midfielder pulls the strings as his side move five points clear of city rivals Inter with 3-0 win
Clarence Seedorf earned plaudits from his AC Milan team-mates after the Dutchman starred in Saturday’s comprehensive 3-0 derby win over Internazionale.
Alexandre Pato opened the scoring after just 45 seconds when he captilised on confusion amongst the Inter defence and poked his effort past Júlio Cesar.
The Brazilian forward then doubled the lead in the 62nd minute when he headed home Ignazio Abate’s cross, eight minutes after Inter’s Cristian Chivu was sent off.
Antonio Cassano then completed the scoring with a 90th-minute penalty. Both teams finished the game with 10 men after Cassano shown a second yellow in stoppage time.
But while Milan’s goalscoring hero Pato deservedly earned praise for his accurate finishes, veteran midfielder Seedorf was singled out by his team-mates after the 35-year-old helped inspire the Rossoneri to a victory which pushes them five points clear of Inter.
“Clarence played a hell of a game, as did Pato, who is simply unmarkable,” said right-back Abate.
And Gianluca Zambrotta added: “Clarence did an excellent job both from a tactical and a technical point of view.”
Meanwhile, Seedorf himself is hoping that Milan’s win will help them seal their first Scudetto triumph since 2004.
“We’ve built something important this season and the time for harvesting the fruit of our hard work is coming,” he said after the game.
“Today we regained self-confidence for the next challenges. Hopefully at the end of the season we’ll celebrate the Scudetto together with the fans.”
