Liverpool can challenge for the title next season, says Kuyt
Forward believes Reds can mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season
Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt believes the Reds can mount a Premier League title challenge next season.
The Holland international has flourished during manager Kenny Dalglish’s short spell in charge, netting eight goals since the Scot took the reigns at Anfield.
And the 30-year-old, who is only two goals short of his best ever goalscoring campaign, is convinced Liverpool, with a few summer recruits, can launch a title bid next season.
“When we were really close in 2009 and finished second I had the same feeling, a matter of a few good signings and we will be right up there,” Kuyt told the club’s website. “I think this is exactly the case at the moment.
“With the arrival of Luis Suárez and Andy Carroll we have two top-quality players, but also with the young lads who are doing very well things are looking much more promising and if we can add a few other good players then we can compete with the best next season.
“We are close I think but like everyone is thinking, we have to move forward and get better and better.”
Kuyt added: “Maybe we are better placed now and we have learnt from what happened in 2009 when we lost Xabi Alonso. If we can move forward then we will be there.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Lucas Leiva believes Liverpool’s current league position does not reflect their recent form.
The Reds have taken 28 out of a possible 42 points since Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson in January, hoisting the club up to sixth place in the Premier League table.
“The team is building confidence and we just have to finish as high as possible at the end of the season,” said the Brazil international. “I think the way we are playing at the moment we deserve to be higher.
“Tottenham still have an advantage because they have one game in hand and are three points ahead but we have to make sure we win every single game and if we do we will have a happy end to the season.”
