Joe Marler and Marcos Ayerza handed two-week bans

Props to miss their clubs' European quarter-finals after picking up bans for brawl in Premiership clash

Joe Marler will miss Harlequins’ Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final against Wasps on Friday after being banned for clashing with Leicester’s Marcos Ayerza.

The pair have been handed two-week suspensions for their brawl during Saturday’s Aviva Premiership clash at The Stoop, when Marler reacted angrily after Ayerza appeared to headbutt the England Saxons prop.

Leicester Tigers’ Ayerza will miss his side’s quarter-final clash with Leinster at Aviva Stadium in Dublin on Saturday.

RFU disciplinary panel chairman Jeff Blackett said: “This was unacceptable behaviour which was captured on live television and not something we want to see in our game. That said, both offences were deemed to have a low end entry point for sanction.

“The starting point for Ayerza striking with the head was four weeks, reduced to two for his guilty plea and relatively good record.

“Marler’s sanction did not alter from the two-week entry point because, despite his guilty plea, his previous disciplinary record counted against him.”
