The French Open main draw boasted three women bidding to be the first British woman to reach the second round in Paris in 17 years.

Anne Keothavong fought through more than three hours and an injury time-out before losing to Vesna Dolonts from a set and a break up, 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

Elena Baltacha is still to play her first match, but meanwhile, the accolades go to Heather Watson -just turned 19 this week -who faced Stephanie Foretz Gacon and the French fans to take a wonderful win in the Paris dusk, 7-6 6-1.

“I actually wanted to break into the top 100 by the end of the year so I’m going to have to set new goals for myself,” she said after the win. “I’m so pleased with that.”

Watson, who has risen 60 places in the rankings this year already, has been picked as one of six rising stars by the women’s tour sponsors. British tennis has something special to cheer about.
