Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero has asked to be released from his contract, the Argentina international revealed on Monday.

The 22-year-old striker extended his contract in the Spanish capital until 2014 in January, but the reported Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur target has still been linked with away from the Madrid club.

“I have thought about it a lot and I am convinced I must be true to myself,” Aguero said in a statement on his personal website.

“I don’t think I should impose a limit on the chance of continuing to learn and grow. After five intense years a stage in my personal development has ended and I have to move on to a new one.”

Atletico finished seventh in La Liga, missing out on Champions League qualification but sealing a Europa League spot for next season.
