Cesc Fàbregas admits he is relishing his chance to play alongside Lionel Messi after the former Arsenal captain scored his first goal for Barcelona on Friday.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who learnt his trade alongside Messi as a teenager at the Catalan club’s academy, smashed home a brilliant volley to open his Barça account as Pep Guardiola’s men beat Porto 2-0 to win the Uefa Super Cup.

Fàbregas’s opportunity in front of goal was carved by a scooped cross from the Argentina international ““ and Barcelona’s latest acquisition could not hide his delight at lining up alongside Messi again.

“I didn’t really come here just to win trophies, I am just very happy to score a goal and happy for the team,” said Fàbregas.

“I’ve not played with Messi for some time but I played with him for five years before so trust me I know him. He sees special passes and scores special goals, and I took the chance and he saw me.”

Barcelona manager Guardiola reserved praise for Fàbregas after the Super Cup triumph over the Portuguese champions in Monaco.

“Cesc is a very, very good player. He has everything it takes to play good football in midfield and arrive behind the main striker,” said Guardiola.

“His goal was a very good pass from Leo and then a very good piece of control from Cesc because he controlled the ball quickly and shot very well.

“We have tried to help him get into the best condition as soon as possible and he will help us try to make a very good season.”
