There was little room for debate in the seedings for the men’s US Open draw. With two Grand Slam titles to his name already this year””the Australian and Wimbledon””and the No1 ranking, it could only be Novak Djokovic.

The Serb, beaten just twice in 59 matches, has won nine titles, five of them Masters, in 2011. He now stands 2,500 clear of world No2, Rafael Nadal and around 5,500 clear of No3, Roger Federer. Andy Murray, at No4, is a further 2,000 or so adrift.

This quartet will fill their allotted four places in the draw, and two of them””Federer in the semis at the French Open and Murray in the final of Cincinnati””scored those only Djokovic defeats.

Djokovic goes into the US Open as favourite for the title after finishing runner-up twice””to Nadal last year and to Federer in 2007. Four other men in the draw, however, have won in New York before: reigning champion Nadal, Federer, Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Roddick.

Other notable names in the top eight are David Ferrer, newly risen above Robin Soderling to No5, and Mardy Fish, the highest ranked American seed for the first time in his career.

Fish has already sealed the Olympus US Open Bonus Challenge with one US Series title, two further finals and a semi-final finish. It ensures that he will double any earnings he picks up at Flushing Meadows.

The draws for the tournament will be made at midday on Thursday.
