US Open 2011: Venus Williams out due to illness
Two-times US Open champions pulls out of her second-round match against Sabine Lisicki due to illness
Venus Williams is out of the US Open after withdrawing from her second-round match against Germany’s Sabine Lisicki due to an ongoing medical condition.
The American 31-year-old, who pulled out of two hard court warm-up tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati earlier this summer with a virus, was due to play 22nd seed Lisicki for a place in the third round.
The two-times Flushing Meadows champion confirmed that the problem, which causes fatigue and joint pain, had made her too ill to continue.
“I’m really disappointed to have to withdraw from this year’s US Open,” said Williams, who was playing in just her fourth tournament of 2011, in a statement.
“I have been recently diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome, an autoimmune disease which is an ongoing medical condition that affects my energy level and causes fatigue and joint pain.
“I enjoyed playing my first match here and wish I could continue but right now I am unable to. I am thankful I finally have a diagnosis and am now focused on getting better and returning to the court soon.”
