Chelsea 2 Bayer Leverkusen 0: Villas-Boas hails ‘positive’ win
David Luiz and Juan Mata scored second half goals to hand Chelsea victory against Bayer Leverkusen
Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas could not hide his delight after watching his side beat Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
Second half goals from David Luiz and Juan Mata helped the Blues make a winning start to their Champions League campaign in Group E – and Villas-Boas was thrilled with his side’s “tremendous” work-rate.
“We created so many opportunities to win the game by more,” said the Chelsea boss. “It was a game for us to win. If there was a fair result it would have been Chelsea winning.
“It is a shame it took the time for the second to arrive. There was tremendous work-rate, tremendous possession and a tremendous amount of shots and good attacking fluency. I am very happy and pleased with the result.”
Fernando Torres returned to Chelsea’s starting line-up and the Spanish striker was involved in both goals.
The 27-year-old showed good vision to find Luiz on the outside of the box before the defender curled his strike past Bernd Leno to give the Premier League side the lead after 67 minutes.
In stoppage time Torres then evaded several challenges and crossed for Mata, who tapped home to secure the Blues’ victory.
Villas-Boas insisted that his decision to leave Blues captain John Terry and Frank Lampard out of his squad was not a gamble.
“I don’t see things like that,” added Villas-Boas. “I think you are trying to look at the negative when there are so many positives. We have a very competitive squad.”
The Chelsea manager also confirmed that the club are no longer investigating comments made by Torres in a recent interview.
The striker spoke to the Spain’s Primera Liga website last week, with a translation appearing on his personal website that quoted him as saying the club’s older players were “very slow”.
Villas-Boas said: “The problem is solved. The investigation is over. We had a chat and the situation is solved because you saw the player was involved and you saw we had a good collective team performance.
“Hopefully these things won’t arise again in the group but if they arise then, as a manager, I will try to solve it.”
