Gian Piero Gasperini has been sacked as coach of Internazionale after failing to win any of his first five games in charge.

Gasperini, who took over at the San Siro in the summer following the departure of Leonardo to Paris Saint-Germain, becomes the first manager of the club to be dismissed without overseeing a single victory.

Inter have suffered four losses under the 53-year-old, including defeats by AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup and Trabzonspor in the Champions League.

The Milan outfit lost their opening league game at Palermo before being held to a goalless draw by Roma at the San Siro. But the 3-1 defeat by Serie A newcomers Novara on Tuesday night forced Massimo Moratti’s hand, with the Inter president now searching for a fourth coach to take the reigns since José Mourinho left the club in 2010 after having led them to an historic treble.

A clubs statement on Wednesday read: “Internazionale can communicate that this morning, at the training base in Appiano Gentile, first-team training was led by [the assistant coaches] Daniele Bernazzani and Giuseppe Baresi.

“The team thanks Gian Piero Gasperini for the efforts he showed in carrying out his role, and express regret over this breaking of the relationship with the manager.”

Moratti refused to comment further on Inter’s search for new coach as he left the club’s offices on Wednesday. “We’ve already discussed this, I believe,” he told reporters.

Filling the void: Inter managers’ records since Mourinho left

1) Rafael Benitez (June 2010 to December 2010)
Games 23, Won 10, Drawn 6, Lost 7

2) Leonardo (December 2010 to June 2011)
Games 32, Won 21, Drawn 4, Lost 7

3) Gian Piero Gasperini (June 2011 to September 2011)
Games 5, Won 0, Drawn 1, Lost 4
