Redknapp regrets not beating Liverpool to Suárez signing
Tottenham boss admits he was keen to bring the Uruguay forward to White Hart Lane in January
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed he was interested in signing Luis Suárez and regrets not having secured his signature ahead of Liverpool.
Kenny Dalglish brought the Uruguay striker to Anfield in January from Ajax following the sale of £50m Fernando Torres to Chelsea.
Suárez has already found the net three times in five appearances for the Reds this season – as well as setting up two goals for his team-mates.
And Redknapp, who was on the lookout for a new front-man to add depth to his squad to support Spurs’ run in the Champions League last season, admits he is a keen admirer of the 24-year-old.
“We looked at Suárez,” said Redknapp, whose side host Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday. “That was a player who we probably should have took, looking back on it now.
“The fee was £30-odd million and that’s a lot of money. We thought he played a bit like Van der Vaart as well.
“We were looking for a target man but I have seen him play up on his own and he can do that. He can play anywhere. He can do anything. He is a top-class, fantastic player.”
