Harry Redknapp has called on Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy to begin talks with Luka Modrić over a new contract for the Croatia playmaker.

The 26-year-old was relentlessly linked with a move to London rivals Chelsea during the summer transfer window, with the Blues said to have offered up to £40m for the midfielder.

But Spurs refused to let Modrić leave, despite the player admitting his head had been turned by the offer from the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Modrić’s sublime strike got Spurs on their way to an emphatic 4-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, and the Tottenham manager believes the transfer saga is no longer weighing on his player’s mind.

“Luka is fine now, he’s just getting on with it,” said Redknapp on Monday. “I think the chairman will sit down with him and discuss his contract.

“That’s what I’d like to happen. The chairman has said he would give it six or seven weeks, sit down and have a chat with him.”

The Spurs boss added: “It was a great strike. That’s why we were offered £40m for him, because he’s a top player.”
