Man United 3 Basel 3: Sir Alex unhappy with ‘careless’ display
Manchester United manager admits his side's draw with Basel at Old Trafford is a "wake-up call"
Sir Alex Ferguson was left frustrated by his side’s “careless” display after Manchester United stumbled to a second successive Champions League draw against Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
A quick-fire Danny Welbeck double sent the home side flying into a 2-0 lead after 17 minutes, but the Premier League champions were pegged back mid-way through the second half thanks to two well-taken goals from Fabian Frei and Alexander Frei.
Alexander Frei then gave the Swiss side a shock lead in the 76th minute from the spot after Antonio Valencia brought down Marco Streller in the box.
United salvaged a draw after Ashley Young’s headed in Nani’s sumptuous cross at the far-post in the 90th minute, but the United manager admitted the result was a “wake-up call” for his side.
“I think we were careless,” said Ferguson after the game. “It’s a wake-up call in many ways. A lack of concentration saw us give the game away really…but we rescued it.
“To concede three goals at home – the defence and midfield have to be better than that in terms of concentration.
“If you lapse, the quality of the Champions League can make you suffer.”
Welbeck conceded that the result was nothing less than a “disappointment” after United had looked in control during the first half.
He said: “We should be finishing games like this, it’s not like us. We’re very disappointed with the result.
“They passed the ball well and I think we found it pretty difficult but we should have put the game away. Now we’ve just got to get back into training and get on with it.”
