Patrice Evra sticks up for Man United goalkeeper David de Gea
France defender is confident new signing will improve after a "difficult start" at Old Trafford
Patrice Evra has issued his support for under-fire Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
The United left-back admits the 20-year-old has made some mistakes since his £18.3m transfer from Atlético Madrid in June – but remains confident that De Gea has a bright future ahead of him at Old Trafford.
“I think David is doing really well and his confidence is growing,” Evra told MUTV. “You can see how all of the players are happy for him when he makes a great save.
“We support him. That is Man United. He had a difficult start but if you saw the game against Chelsea you’ll know he made some great saves, and he made some more on Saturday [against Stoke City].
“I’m really confident with him and you know he gets a lot of support from the players and the manager. He can be one of the best.”
United dropped their first points of the season in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday and Evra believes it was a fair result.
“It was a good point,” he continued. “It is really difficult to go to Stoke and get three points. We did it last season and we had a good opportunity to do it again on Saturday through Ryan Giggs.
“But big teams come here and only get a point. It was not an easy game and it finished with a draw.”
He added: “We are disappointed because we conceded a goal from a set-piece, but after the game you feel strong. The boss told us he needed men before the game and I think all the lads showed character and personality.
“It was a shame we didn’t win the game, but it is not easy to play at Stoke.”
