England lock Courtney Lawes has been cited for allegedly striking Mario Ledesma with his knee during the 13-9 win over Argentina in Dunedin.

Lawes collided with Ledesma during the first half of England’s 13-9 win over Argentina in their Pool B opener on Saturday, when the lock came bursting across to attempt to stop the hooker scoring in the right corner.

The 22-year-old must now appear before a disciplinary hearing, which will take place in Auckland at 0300 BST on Tuesday.

England manager Martin Johnson said: “We have received notification of Courtney’s citing. We will of course provide Rugby World Cup with any information required and attend the hearing as requested.”

Lawes is alleged to have breached law 10.4(a), which concerns “punching or striking [with the knee]”.
