Xavi Hernández believes the arrival of Cesc Fàbregas at Barcelona has helped him step up his performances at the Camp Nou.

The former Arsenal captain sealed a much-anticipated return to his boyhood club this summer and has already scored four goals in five league outings for the Catalan giants.

With Andrés Iniesta currently sidelined with a hamstring tear, Fàbregas has started all of Barça’s La Liga games so far this term – and Xavi says he is thrilled to have developed a fruitful partnership with his 24-year-old Spain team-mate.

“I think Cesc makes my football better and feel that we complement each other very well,” said the 31-year-old midfielder.

“If he goes up I stay back and cover for him or vice versa. I am very happy on the pitch and so is he. We have shown that many times this year.”

Pep Guardiola’s men are currently second in La Liga behind Real Betis after a Lionel Messi hat-trick helped them to an emphatic 5-0 win over Atlético Madrid on Saturday.

Real Madrid are in fifth place, a point behind the Catalans following their 6-2 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano.
