David Silva believes Manchester City can bounce back from a difficult start to life in the Champions League and beat Villarreal on Tuesday.

Roberto Mancini’s side have managed just one point from their opening two games following a 1-1 home draw with Napoli and a 2-0 defeat by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

But City playmaker Silva is confident the club can bring their scintillating Premier League form into Europe’s elite club competition.

“We have got a lot of games under our belt in the league,” said Silva. “In the Champions League we have only played two games and those two games were against top sides.

“Maybe it is a case of needing a few more games under our belt in that competition too in order to get the same consistency we have been showing in the league.

“We have made things a little bit hard for ourselves but we can start to improve tonight.”

Former Valencia star Silva faced Villarreal seven times during his time in La Liga, winning on four occasions. His only goal against City’s Spanish opposition came during Valencia’s 4-1 league victory at the Mestalla in January 2010.

“They are a great side,” he added. “They like to keep hold of the ball, they like to pass it around and they can also hit you on the break.

“We have got to be careful and try to retain as much possession as we can and avoid being hit on the counter.”
