Fernando Torres revival ‘not linked to Juan Mata signing’

Manager André Villas-Boas insists Juan Mata's arrival is not the reason behind Fernando Torres's resurgence

Fernando Torres’s improved form is not linked to Juan Mata’s arrival at Chelsea, according to Blues manager André Villas-Boas.

Torres finally brought an end to his lengthy goal drought when he found the net at Old Trafford during The Blues’ 3-1 defeat by Manchester United.

And Mata set up the Spain striker to score again in Chelsea’s next league game against Swansea before Torres was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Mark Gower.

But despite summer signing Mata looking to have developed an instant on-pitch understanding with his compatriot, Villas-Boas is adamant the 23-year-old midfielder’s arrival is not the reason behind Torres’s improvement.

“It has nothing to do with it, in my opinion,” Villas-Boas, whose side host Everton on Saturday, told a news conference at Chelsea’s training ground.

“We don’t add nationalities for people to get involved socially outside of the pitch, we just add them in terms of quality and talent.

“They [Torres and Mata] got to know each other a little bit better now and of course they share social behaviour. It’s nothing new that the French go more with the French-speaking people and it’s the same with the Spanish and the Portuguese.

“But [that is] not what we’re looking for. What we are looking for is relationships on the pitch and we hope for them to establish [this] not only with a certain companion but with every single companion, with no kinds of bias.”
