Real Madrid coach José Mourinho claims the mass brawl that marred the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona flared up as a result of the Catalan club’s provocations.

Mourinho, who appeared to poke his finger into the eye of Barça assistant Tito Vilanova during the ugly scenes at the Nou Camp, has been handed a two-match touchline ban by the Spanish football federeation for his actions.

Tempers flared late on in the second-leg match in August following a dangerous tackle by Real Madrid’s Marcelo on Barcelona debutant Cesc Fàbregas.

But although Mourinho admits he should not have reacted, he insists his actions were a “natural” response to Barcelona’s provocations.

“Football is all about emotions and sometimes you’ll get provoked. There are moments when you don’t react to provocations and sometimes you do,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

“The situation at Camp Nou was one where we got provoked [by Barcelona]. My reaction was perhaps not the right thing to do, but it was a natural one.”

Marcelo was sent off, and David Villa and Mesut Ozil were both shown red cards despite having already been substituted during the game, which Pep Guardiola’s men won 3-2 on the night to clinch a 5-4 aggregate victory.

Mourinho’s Real Madrid are currently third, one point behind La Liga pace-setters and defending champions Barcelona in the Primera División table.
