Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué is confident that Pep Guardiola will sign a new deal to extend his spell in charge of the Spanish champions.

The future of the Barcelona coach has again become the subject of speculation following the 40-year-old’s refusal to sign anything longer than one-year extensions at the Nou Camp.

Guardiola’s current deal expires at the end of the season but Pique is convinced that the coach will eventually put pen to paper on a new deal, claiming that he has “no reason” to leave the La Liga club.

“I don’t want to put any pressure on Guardiola,” Piqué told El Mundo Deportivo. “He will do things at his own tempo, like he has done every year. He has always signed a new deal, though, and I believe he’ll do so again this year.

“He loves his job here and the players belief in him. I think this team is the best in history and should never be broken up. Pep doesn’t have any reason to leave the club.”

Guardiola has led the Catalan giants to three La Liga crowns and two Champions League triumphs since taking over from Frank Rijkaard in 2008.

Serie A side Internazionale are the latest club reported to be interested in securing the services of the 40-year-old, who has a 71.65 per cent win ratio as Barça coach.

But Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has vowed to do everything in his power to convince the Spaniard to stay at the Camp Nou after his current deal expires at the end of the season.

“We will do our best to keep Guardiola,” Rosell said. “He is the best coach in the history of the club and is also a great person. We will do our best to keep him.”
