Rio Ferdinand will make his return to the Manchester United squad for Sunday’s derby after sitting out the Champions League trip to Otelul Galati.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who opted to give the 32-year-old defender a rest in midweek, revealed that all the players who travelled to Romania are available for Sunday’s crunch clash with Manchester City.

“We left Rio behind because we didn’t feel we’d use him,” said Ferguson. “Everyone is fit and obviously the City game is an exciting prospect.

“I think City are doing fantastically well. If they hadn’t thrown away a two-goal lead at Fulham they’d have a 100 per cent record. It could be quite a game on Sunday and I’m looking forward to it.”

Roberto Mancini’s big-spending City are currently two points ahead of United at the top of the Premier League table.

But as the hype continues to build ahead of the Old Trafford clash, Ferguson has warned that the game itself may not live up to expectations.

“Sometimes derbies are disappointing,” he continued. “Last Saturday against Liverpool, for an hour-and-a-quarter, nothing happened, but once a goal was scored it was a great game.

“Goals change the complexion of a match and you can get a reaction when a team goes behind. It could happen on Sunday, but who knows?”
