Salomon Kalou wants Chelsea to guarantee him more first-team football before the midfielder agrees to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge.

The Ivory Coast international, 26, made an appearance as a second-half substitute during Chelsea’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Genk on Wednesday.

And Blues boss André Villas-Boas revealed the club are in talks with the midfielder, who could leave on a free transfer when his contract expires in the summer, over a new deal.

But Kalou wants assurances that he will see more playing time. “That’s what every player wants to have, game time. Because if you’re not playing every weekend, how are you going to improve yourself?” he said.

“So it’s very important to play to improve and to push yourself to the limit. That’s what I’m looking for. I think we’re going to agree on something good.”

The former Feyenoord winger, who joined Chelsea five seasons ago, is keen to stay with the Blues despite reported interest from Liverpool last summer.

“I want to stay, I want to be here. I like Chelsea. I’ve had a fantastic five seasons here and won some prizes,” he continued.

“Chelsea are looking forward to the future and I’m still a young player and I think my future can be here.”
