Gareth Bale’s brace helped Tottenham Hotspur move into fifth place following a comfortable victory over Queens Park Rangers at White Hart Lane.

Goals from Bale and Rafael van der Vaart put Spurs ahead before half-time but QPR hit back immediately after the break with Jay Bothroyd’s strike offering hope to Neil Warnock’s side.

But Bale sealed victory for Harry Redknapp’s men with a spectacular strike in the 72nd minute to help the Londoners close the gap on their rivals at the top of the Premier League.

“It was a fantastic performance,” Redknapp said. “In the first half we played some great football and moved the ball quickly. The movement and passing was incredible.

“They changed how they played, got it forward and played with more intensity in the second half but Gareth finished them off with a great goal.

“Suddenly they got a lifeline at 2-1 and it changes games so that third goal was important. I said at half-time we shouldn’t relax in the second half but, to be fair to them, they came out and raised their game. Overall we were outstanding today.”

Redknapp also praised Scott Parker’s display, saying that the former West Ham star has brought some vital ingredients to the north London club since his arrival in August.

“Scott is a fantastic player,” he added. “He was top of my list and he’s just what we need.

“He tackles, doesn’t give the ball away and he’s a great boy and fantastic person. He’s what you build great football clubs around.”

Parker was named man of the match after a commanding display in midfield and the England international praised the performance of his team-mates.

“They come out second half and put us under a bit of pressure but overall I think we fully deserved to win,” Parker said.

“We played some lovely stuff in the first half and some good football towards the end there with a great finish from Gareth [Bale].”

“I’m enjoying it immensely really. Playing alongside players like Gareth, Luka [Modric], Rafa [van der Vaart] ““ everyone out there today is fantastic to play with and obviously winning games which is very nice as well.

“I think this squad and this team can go places this year and we believe in ourselves and we can certainly do something.”
