Arsène Wenger tips Arsenal to close gap on title rivals
Arsène Wenger predicts Arsenal will climb the Premier League table as he expects their rivals to drop points
Arsène Wenger expects Arsenal to close the gap on their title rivals if they can continue their recent run of good results in the Premier League.
The Gunners are unbeaten in six games in all competitions, including three consecutive league victories which have hoisted Wenger’s team up into seventh place.
The 62-year-old is predicting Arsenal’s title rivals to falter and has warned his side they must keep winning if they are to climb the table further.
“If we are capable of maintaining our run we will come back up quickly,” he said. “I think we have made a big improvement in recent weeks by bridging the gap and I am personally convinced that the teams ahead of us will drop points.
“If we are capable of maintaining the pace in the league that we have shown recently then we will come back.”
Arsenal face West Bromwich Albion at The Emirates on Saturday hoping to avoid a repeat of last season’s shock 3-2 defeat by The Baggies.
Goals from Peter Odemwingie, Gonzalo Jara and Jerome Thomas subjected Wenger’s side to a surprise loss last September – but the Gunners boss is confident there will be not be a similar upset tomorrow.
“It was a big setback on the day,” said Wenger. “We didn’t turn up. That was a good lesson for us.
“Overall I feel we are in a completely different state of mind now. We have a desire to do well and I am convinced we will.”
Wenger has also backed summer signing Park Chu-Young to fulfil his potential for Arsenal despite a disappointing performance in their Champions League clash against Marseille on Tuesday.
“I think he played a little bit inhibited,” Wenger said. “His real game was against Bolton and on the night against Marseille I think he was a bit fazed by the pressure.
“You will see the real Park very quickly. He is quick, intelligent, mobile, a good finisher and many of these aspects didn’t come out on the night. He will be a good player for Arsenal.”
