Fernando Torres will come good at Chelsea, insists Roberto Di Matteo
Chelsea assistant manager Roberto Di Matteo has no doubts that Fernando Torres will hit top gear at Stamford Bridge
Roberto Di Matteo is convinced that Fernando Torres is on his way to rediscovering the form that earned him a reputation as one of Europe’s top strikers.
The 27-year-old forward, who has netted four times for the Blues this season, has not scored since the 5-0 thrashing of Genk at Stamford Bridge in October.
Torres joined Chelsea for £50m in January from Liverpool, where he scored an impressive 81 goals in 142 appearances.
And despite questions remaining over the Spain international’s stuttering form since his move to west London, assistant manager Di Matteo has no concerns, insisting “the goals will come”.
“There are a lot of positive signs with Fernando. We’ve been pleased with him,” Di Matteo told a news conference ahead of Chelsea’s Carling Cup clash with Torres’s former club Liverpool on Tuesday.
“I know we all expect our strikers to score, but if they don’t, you look at their performance in the team, and we’ve been pleased.
“The goals will come, no doubt. He’s got great talent and has scored goals before. He knows what to do and how to do it, and we have a lot of faith in him as well. We can see the player has talent, the way he trains every day, the effort he puts in.
“That’s how you assess him. I have no doubt that he will score goals for us. He’s done it this season – he started very well. He knows that we support him. We talk to the players. He knows that.”
