Mancini demands league repeat after Man City win at Arsenal
Roberto Mancini is eyeing a repeat of Tuesday's Carling Cup win at Arsenal in next month's Premier League clash with the Gunners
Roberto Mancini watched Manchester City advance to the Carling Cup semi-finals with a win at Arsenal – and then challenged his side to repeat the feat in the Premier League next month.
Sergio Aguero grabbed the winner seven minutes from time when he finished a free-flowing counter-attack to send City through to the last four.
And with the Premier League leaders set host the Gunners on 18 December, Mancini has called on his side to secure what would be another crucial victory in their push for the title against Arsène Wenger’s men.
“We had a chance seven minutes from the end and we scored. It was a great counter-attack,” he said. “It will be better to win here in the Premier League but it is a good feeling because we are into the semi-finals of the competition.”
Both sides made 10 changes from their starting line-ups at the weekend and Mancini insists he had no choice after having played Liverpool just 48 hours before Tuesday’s clash.
He continued: “We have a strong squad – all of the top teams have a good squad and can change eight, nine or 10 players. It is normal for the Carling Cup.
“December and January will be crucial months because we play tough games and we play every three days. After January we can talk about whether we can win things or not.”
Meanwhile, City winger Adam Johnson insists the Eastlands club have set out to win the first available silverware of the season.
“For me and the lads that play in this competition this gives us a chance to push to play in the team week-in, week-out,” said Johnson.
2If we can come away with another trophy that would be a massive thing for the club. Every competition we are in, we want to win it.”
